After
the brief tenures of Jones, Hoddle and Gray, Saints finally start
rising up the table under Gordon Strachan. Strachan built on the
good signings of his predecessors and took Saints to being European
contenders once again. Fans finally got the stadium they had been
waiting over 30 years for, the 32 500 St. Mary's stadium.

Under
Nicholl & especially Branfoot, the club slid towards relegation,
often escaping only on the last day of the season ! Fans could take
their minds off it all by watching the mercurial skills of Matthew
Le Tissier. Saints became a plc and continue to go through a manager
every season.

Saints
golden age saw a 2nd place finish in the league, regular, if brief,
European football. Star names such as Shilton, Watson, Nicholl,
Mills and Keegan graced the Dell. Younsters such as Wright, Wallace,
Shearer, Ruddock and Le Tissier made their mark. Lawrie McMenemy's
departure signalled the end of the good times amidst player unrest..

1970s |
Ted
Bates handed over the reins to Lawrie McMenemy who promptly led
the side to relegation. McMenemy rebuilt a more consistant side
over the following seasons, winning the FA Cup along the way in
1976. players. When Saints were promoted the following season, McMenemy's
team only looked up.

Ted
Bates' excellent term in charge continued as he took the newly promoted
Saints on a challenge for promotion as soon as they were in Division
2. That promotion came in '65/66, and Saints would go on to taste
their first European football. It was either that or narrowly avoiding
relegation. The '60s certainly weren't dull for the Saints!

On
the slide, Saints were relegated in 52/53. With restricted finacnes
the club looked stuck. The man to turn it round was Ted Bates. After
some false starts, and a move to the new 3rd Division South, Saints
finally went up in the '59/60 campaign.

With
the war wiping out the football league fixture list, it wasn't until
'46/47 that Saints re-entered Division 2. Now under manager Bill
Dodgin, Saints would proceed to throw away promotion on two successive
years.

Saints
spent the decade stuck in division tow. As key players were sold,
their position slipped from midtable towards relegation. The arrival
of Tom Parker as manager promised much, but the outbreak of war
ended any chance of seeing what Parker and his signings would do.

Saints
were founder members of the third division. The next season they
won the Third Division South. Saints settled into division two almost
gaining promotion, but sellting into mid table as players had to
be sold. The club purchased the Dell in 1926 and reached two cup
semi-finals.

Saints narrowly
avoided releagtion from the Southern League as crowds fell and finances
were tight. Jimmy McIntyre took Saints back to the top six before
was put an end to the football calender.

and three Southern League tiitles were the high point s of a very
successful decade. However, wage changes meant the end of this very
sucessful period.

1890s |
Southampton entered
the Southern League in 1894. They owuld win the competition for
three consecutive seasons and the club's success enabled them to
move into the Dell.

Southampton
St. Mary's YMA formed in 1885, and played their first game in November
that year. They would enter their first competition in the 1887/88
season and go onto win it for three consectutive seasons.
